Hygro-Thermometers & Moisture Meters
Professional instruments for measuring relative humidity, temperature and material moisture in industrial, environmental, HVAC, construction, food, storage, laboratory and quality control applications.
Relative Humidity – measurement of moisture in the air
Temperature – simultaneous ambient temperature measurement
Material Moisture – wood, building materials and other products
Dew Point – evaluation of condensation conditions
Professional Measurement – portable instruments, probes and data logging options
Hygro-thermometers and moisture meters are used to evaluate humidity in air and materials, supporting environmental control, process monitoring, quality assurance and technical diagnostics.
Although the terms humidity and moisture are sometimes used interchangeably, they describe different measurements. Relative humidity refers to moisture in the air, while material moisture refers to the water content within a solid or bulk material.
EMI offers solutions for ambient temperature and humidity, dew point, wood moisture, building materials, industrial processes and specialist applications, with portable instruments, external probes and data logging options.
Air Humidity or Material Moisture?
Choosing the correct instrument starts by identifying what needs to be measured. For ambient conditions, a hygro-thermometer measures relative humidity and temperature. For wood, walls, concrete, paper or other materials, a dedicated moisture meter is normally required.
Main Types of Humidity & Moisture Instruments
01
Hygro-Thermometers
Portable instruments for simultaneous measurement of relative humidity and air temperature. Suitable for HVAC, buildings, warehouses, laboratories, production areas and environmental monitoring.
02
Relative Humidity Meters
Instruments designed to measure moisture conditions in ambient air, helping monitor comfort, storage conditions, production environments, ventilation and climate-controlled areas.
03
Dew Point Meters
Instruments that calculate or measure dew point conditions, helping evaluate condensation risk in buildings, HVAC systems, industrial processes, compressed air systems and surface treatment applications.
04
Wood Moisture Meters
Instruments designed to determine moisture content in wood, timber and wood-based materials, supporting drying, storage, production and quality control.
05
Building Moisture Meters
Instruments for evaluating moisture conditions in walls, plaster, concrete, screeds and other construction materials, helping identify damp areas, leaks and drying problems.
06
Moisture Meters for Materials
Dedicated solutions for measuring moisture in different products and materials, including paper, cardboard, textiles, bulk materials and industrial raw materials, depending on the instrument and sensor.
07
Hygro-Thermometers with Data Logging
Instruments combining humidity and temperature measurement with automatic data recording, allowing users to evaluate trends, document conditions and analyse historical measurements.
Air Humidity Measurement
Relative humidity is one of the most important parameters when evaluating indoor environments, storage areas, laboratories, HVAC systems and manufacturing conditions.
Hygro-thermometers typically combine relative humidity and temperature measurement and, depending on the model, may also calculate dew point, wet-bulb temperature, absolute humidity or other psychrometric parameters.
Material Moisture Measurement
Moisture inside a material can affect its quality, stability, processing, storage and final performance.
Depending on the application, moisture meters may use penetration pins, external probes, electrical resistance, capacitive measurement or other measurement principles. The correct instrument should therefore be selected according to the material being tested.
Pin-Type or Non-Destructive Moisture Measurement?
Pin-Type Moisture Meters
Measuring pins penetrate or contact the material, allowing moisture conditions to be evaluated at the measurement point. This method is commonly used for wood and certain building materials.
Non-Destructive Moisture Meters
Non-destructive instruments can assess moisture conditions without inserting pins into the material, making them useful when visible damage to the surface should be avoided.
How to Choose the Right Humidity or Moisture Meter
Measurement Type – air humidity or material moisture

Calibration and Measurement Traceability
For applications where measurement traceability is required, selected hygro-thermometers and humidity instruments can be supplied or calibrated at defined temperature and relative humidity points, depending on the instrument and application requirements.
Hygro-Thermometer & Moisture Meter FAQ
What is a hygro-thermometer?
A hygro-thermometer measures both relative humidity and temperature, making it suitable for environmental and indoor climate measurements.
What is the difference between humidity and moisture?
Humidity normally refers to water vapour in the air, while material moisture describes water contained within a solid or bulk material.
Can the same instrument measure air humidity and wood moisture?
Usually these are different measurements requiring different sensors or measurement technologies. Some multifunction instruments may support several probes, but compatibility must be checked for each model.
What is dew point?
Dew point is the temperature at which the air reaches saturation and condensation can begin. It is useful when evaluating condensation conditions in buildings, HVAC and industrial processes.
Should I choose a pin or non-destructive moisture meter?
This depends on the material and application. Pin meters provide local contact measurements, while non-destructive meters are useful when surface damage should be avoided.
Are humidity meters available with data logging?
Yes. Selected instruments can automatically record humidity and temperature values, allowing historical conditions and trends to be analysed.
How do I select the right moisture meter?
Start by identifying whether you need air humidity or material moisture measurement, then consider the material, measurement range, accuracy, probe type and whether data logging is required.

  • Food Moisture

Our food moisture meter offers fast and reliable nondestructive measurements of the water content of various food products.

Humidity, or water content, of a food is one of the most important and most evaluated indices in food. It is of great importance for reflecting the solids content of a product, for interfering in its stability (chemical, biochemical and microbiological reactions) and in its texture.

Usually the amount of water in the food is expressed by the value of determining the total water contained in the food. However, this value does not provide information on how water is distributed in the food, nor does it allow to know if all the water is similarly connected to the food. Different types of food with the same water content differ in their stability or shelf life (shelf life).

  • Soil Moisture Meter

The importance of measuring moisture in compost.

The humidity of the compost pile has a direct effect on the activity of microorganisms and indirectly on the temperature it reaches. The humidity considered to be optimal varies depending on the materials to be composted, although the bibliography points to reasonable values in the range of 40 to 65% and the ideal is between 50-60%. Above these values, there is a slower decomposition, anaerobic conditions, bad odors and nutrient leaching. If the moisture content drops below 40%, the pile becomes too dry for microbial activity. An
Since the temperature reached is high, it is normal for evaporation to occur and, as a result, it may be necessary to moisten the battery frequently.
