Understanding Soil Moisture

Soil is considered saturated when all pores are filled with water. Gravity causes some of this water to drain into deeper layers, becoming groundwater. The remaining moisture—retained by surface tension and capillary forces—is known as adhesive water. Soil moisture is categorized into five classes: wet, moist, fresh, dry, and arid. Key factors such as pore size and soil density affect water retention capacity.
