The ICP DAS I-7520 CR is an industrial converter designed to convert serial RS-232 signals to RS-485, providing a simple and reliable connection between equipment using different serial interfaces.
It is particularly suitable where an RS-232 port on an industrial computer, PLC or other controller needs to communicate with devices installed on an RS-485 network.
RS-485 technology overcomes many of the limitations of RS-232, particularly in terms of transmission distance, networking capability and resistance to electromagnetic interference, making the I-7520 CR suitable for industrial and distributed systems.
The I-7520 CR makes it possible to create long-distance industrial serial communication using conventional hardware equipped with RS-232. Conversion is transparent, simplifying integration without significant changes to existing hardware or software.
RS-232 ports are widely used on industrial computers, controllers and automation equipment. However, they are generally intended for point-to-point communication over relatively short distances.
RS-485 uses differential signalling, providing improved electrical noise immunity and significantly greater transmission distances. The I-7520 CR performs this conversion transparently.
The specified maximum distance is 1,200 m at 9.6 kbps and 400 m at 115.2 kbps using Belden 9841 2P cable. Actual transmission distance may vary depending on cable, installation, communication speed and network conditions.
The I-7520 CR provides 3000 VDC isolation on the RS-232 side, helping protect connected equipment against potential differences, ground loops and other undesirable electrical conditions in industrial installations.
RS-485 is also particularly suitable for industrial environments because differential signalling provides improved robustness against electromagnetic interference.
The integrated Self-Tuner ASIC automatically controls RS-485 transmission direction. This simplifies installation and eliminates the need for additional manual control of communication direction.
