The Elcometer 456 Coating Thickness Gauge – Separate is a professional coating thickness meter designed for fast, accurate and repeatable measurements on metal substrates. Available with a wide range of interchangeable separate probes, this instrument provides outstanding flexibility for measuring paint thickness, dry film thickness, plating, galvanizing and other industrial coatings.
Built for demanding industrial environments, the Elcometer 456 combines accuracy up to ±1%, rapid reading speed, rugged construction and advanced memory and data output functions. It is an ideal solution for quality control, corrosion protection inspection, industrial painting, automotive applications, marine coating inspection, metal fabrication and industrial maintenance.
The Elcometer 456 Separate has been developed to deliver greater measurement flexibility where access is limited or where the operator needs to select a specific probe according to substrate type and component geometry. This version is especially suitable for technical applications involving difficult access areas, complex structures and demanding industrial environments where flexibility matters.
Available in three versions — Model B, Model S and Model T — the gauge can match different inspection requirements. From a reliable entry-level solution to a top-tier model with advanced batch management, scan modes, review graphs and extended memory, the Elcometer 456 provides a scalable solution for professional coating inspection.
Speed is essential in industrial inspection workflows. The Elcometer 456 provides more than 70 readings per minute, allowing inspectors to increase productivity without compromising reliability. When used with a Scan Probe, performance can exceed 140 readings per minute, making it ideal for large surface inspections and high-volume quality control routines.
Accuracy is critical in coating thickness measurement. The Elcometer 456 is engineered to deliver repeatable and reproducible readings across different surface profiles, including smooth, rough, curved and thin materials. With accuracy up to ±1%, the gauge meets the requirements of multiple international coating inspection standards and supports reliable documentation and compliance.
Depending on the model, the Elcometer 456 can store from the most recent readings up to 150,000 measurements organised into 2,500 batches. Alphanumeric batch identification and model-dependent individual calibration memory make the instrument highly suitable for structured quality control processes and traceable inspection routines.
Data can be transferred through USB or Bluetooth® to a PC, tablet or mobile device. Combined with ElcoMaster®, users can analyse results, create professional inspection reports, organise projects and improve process traceability.
Designed for daily industrial use, the Elcometer 456 features a rugged body with excellent impact resistance and protection against dust and water. The bright 2.4” colour TFT display with permanent backlight provides excellent visibility in indoor and outdoor environments. Large tactile buttons make operation easier, even while wearing gloves.
In formal quality systems such as those described in ISO 9001, coating thickness gauges must be properly controlled, logged and calibrated. The Elcometer 456 supports multiple calibration methods, including factory calibration, 2-point calibration, 1-point zero calibration and zero offset in accordance with ISO 19840.
To achieve the best possible performance and take full advantage of the gauge’s accuracy, it is recommended to use traceable coating thickness standards, including certified foils and zero test plates. This helps ensure reliable measurements and compliance with specification requirements.
